No press, please: Why some big names in fashion don’t talk
Designers used to talk a lot. Not so much these days. Do luxury customers care about who makes their clothes? From the upcoming fashion issue out on August 30.
I interviewed designer Jean Paul Gaultier recently (his Fashion Freak Show is coming to Brisbane in September). Charming and full of vim at 72, we talked for an hour about everything from his daily walking habit to his favourite runway memories and what it was like to work with Madonna.
Gaultier was open and generous. He talked about making men objects and the reverence he felt for women. He spoke openly about sexuality, diversity, his creative process. How he is still obsessed with fashion and has no plans to ever fully retire.
