When first lady Dr Jill Biden made an appearance at Ralph Lauren’s New York Fashion Week show last Thursday evening, just days before the first presidential debate, it begged the question: was the brand making a political statement?

“It’s an honour to have the first lady of the United States [at the show],” said David Lauren, the company’s chief branding and innovation officer, sidestepping the question neatly.
