Karl Lagerfeld, dead at 85, straddled old-world couture and modern style
As the creative director for Chanel since 1983 and Fendi since 1965, and the visionary behind his own label, for more than 30 years, there is perhaps nobody who had a greater influence on modern style than Karl Lagerfeld, who died on Wednesday at 85.
Known for his rakish appearance (the silver-grey ponytail, the ever-present cravat), a penchant for outrageous quotes (he once called selfies "electronic masturbation") and a host of signature accessories including his beloved Diet Coke (he was known to drink 10 cans daily) and his famous cat, Choupette (after whom Lagerfeld named a beauty line), Lagerfeld was an icon not only for his sensational impact on fashion. As a personality, he was larger than life.
