How Steven Khalil brought glamour to brides the world over
He makes bespoke gowns for celebrities including Jennifer Lopez. Now, 30 years after launching his eponymous label, the Sydney designer is ready for even bigger things.
Some 750 million people across the world tuned in to watch the-then Prince Charles marry Lady Diana Spencer – and in Campbelltown, Sydney, six-year-old Steven Khalil was one of them. It was a formative moment, one he says “triggered something” within him.
“I told my mum, ‘I’m going to make wedding dresses when I grow up’,” he says now. “She looked at me like I was crazy, but I think she knew that even then, at that age, I was serious. She was so supportive and amazing, even though nobody in our family knew anyone who worked in fashion.”
