Fashion catches up with va-va-voom Versace

It may have been launched in 1978, but the Italian label's excess and spectacle are somehow perfect for today's times.

Clashing prints, fabulous metals and Day-Glo colours, seen here backstage at the autumn-winter 2019 show, were Versace's signatures from the start. 

Lady Gaga may have had three costume changes on the Met Gala red carpet in early May, and Cardi B might literally have wiped the floor with her Thom Browne gown, but it was Versace that was the most visible – and valuable – label on the night.

The theme, of course, was a gift to Versace – "Camp: Notes on Fashion" has been the design house's modus operandi since 1978, when Gianni Versace released his first collection. But it was also a sign that fashion itself has finally caught up with the Italian label, which has always been about dressing to excess, and then some. Nobody does OTT like Versace.
