Two experienced sailors who died in freakishly similar circumstances within hours of one another during a treacherous night in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race have become the first fatalities in the prestigious event since 1998.

Event organisers said Nick Smith (on the right) was thrown against Bowline’s winch.
