Why performing a striptease can be a feminist statement
Porcelain Alice says the art of burlesque is a place where women are in charge, are their own boss and even encourages some confidence-building objectification.
Despite being nearly nude professionally for over seven years, burlesque performer Porcelain Alice is yet to do a bucks’ night. “They can see from my Instagram that I do weird, vintage things. (She mimes a slow glove peel and cracks up.) ‘Here comes my hand … and a little story about feminism and why I get to take off this corset.’ It’s not really what they’re looking for … ”
Alice is a full-time producer and performer. Along with two guests – “booty manipulator” Demon Derriere and “swing dancing Charleston dream” Kelly Ann Doll – she will discuss the art of burlesque at The Sydney Opera House on March 13, part of the All About Women festival. In amongst otherwise weighty themes, theirs is the odd one out.
