Sydney’s Mardi Gras might be Australia’s brightest beacon of freedom for gays and lesbians, but at the Adelaide Festival last weekend there was a haunting reminder that the journey to equality began 50 years ago on the Torrens River.

Watershed: The Death Of Dr Duncan is an oratorio commemorating the drowning in that watercourse of Dr George Duncan, a British-born law lecturer at the University Of Adelaide.
