What’s in a name? When it comes to art, everything. Certain artists command top prices, especially when they’re rising in market popularity. A name could mean the difference between paying $475 or $54,000 – for the same painting.

This is the fate of a painting by Danish artist Gerda Strøm, whose works are humbly priced. One of Strøm’s paintings, a charming still life, signed and dated 1949, sold at a small German auction house last May for €300 ($475).
