Seidlers’ royal vision finally plays out ahead of reopening

A glass-walled lobby at Sydney’s refurbished Theatre Royal will allow the vision of designers Harry and Penelope Seidler to be fully appreciated for the first time.

Sydney’s modernist Theatre Royal may have opened in 1976 but, according to Penelope Seidler, who helped design the theatre with her late husband, Harry Seidler, the public will only see it properly when it relaunches in December.

After being mothballed in 2016 amid a redevelopment of the surrounding MLC Centre, the NSW government rescued the theatre from becoming a food court or shops in 2019, when it leased the building from owner Dexus for 55 years and tendered for an impresario to return it to its former glory.
