Classic films are big business – so why does Netflix ignore them?

The streamer has tragically flunked the opportunity to be all things to all subscribers: a continually refreshing content machine and an archive of the best old films.

Ever wondered, in the eternal hunt for any good films to watch on Netflix, why there isn’t a way of selecting your options by decade? The reason is fairly simple, if also bewildering in what it throws up.

If such a search method existed, the categories “1910s”, “1920s”, “1930s”, “1940s”, 1950s”, and “1960s” – that’s to say, about half of film history – would come up with a very curious bunch of a few dozen films on UK Netflix, almost entirely in Swedish.
