Liked The Sopranos? You’ll love this doco about it
Twenty-five years after The Sopranos first aired, this two-part series on Binge explores the way the show’s art mirrors the life of its creator.
Two wise guys walk into a faithfully reconstructed psychiatrist’s office. Over the course of the next 160 minutes there will be much mirth but this is no joke. One of the men is Oscar-winning documentary-maker Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side). The other is David Chase, creator of a groundbreaking TV mobster classic.
A quarter-century on from The Sopranos’ debut, it is the subject of this fascinating series, along with the life and career of its creator. Fittingly, the pair co-habit a set replicating Dr Melfi’s office from the hit show. This choice of doctor/patient for Gibney’s keynote interviews goes beyond showbiz gimmickry. Its significance becomes clear as Chase walks the documentarian through his gloomy upbringing in New Jersey.
