As a schoolboy in South Africa, Kerr Neilson never got the most out of the William Shakespeare plays he was obliged to study.
Five decades later, the “stiff and regimented” readings of the Bard he endured have culminated in Neilson giving a $3 million gift to Bell Shakespeare, an Australian performing arts company whose actors travel to schools and juvenile justice centres to bring the playwright alive for kids.
