Royal Melbourne, the host club for this year’s Presidents Cup, is used to witnessing miracles.

In 1963, South African Gary Player flew for 58 hours from Paris to Melbourne – via New York, San Francisco, Hawaii, Fiji and Sydney – to play in the Australian Open there, landing only five hours before he was due to tee off. Without seeing the course beforehand, and with a local caddie on his bag, Player shot 70, 70, 70 and 68 to win the tournament by seven shots.
