WA:$1.5bn PNG nickel mine to go ahead

Australian miner Highlands Pacific says its $US1.5 billion ($1.54 billion) Ramu nickel project in Papua New Guinea will start production next year, despite local threats to shut it down.

The mine has been plagued by local protests over plans to dump 100 million tonnes of waste 400m offshore over its 20-year operation.
