Michael Byrne was Japan Post's last shot. He had run trucking companies most of his life, including Toll's arch rival, Linfox, and was as persuasive on the loading dock of a truck depot as in a Collins Street board room.

But when Byrne became Toll managing director on New Year's Day, 2017, there was one thing he couldn't do: get all five of his divisional presidents into line.
