As Australian states and territories debate when to open their borders - and the nation anticipates the creation of a trans-Tasman bubble between July and September - Europe is facing similar challenges on a bigger scale.

Global tourism activity is expected to halve this year, with Europe set to be hit hard over the summer months. The World Economic Forum warns of a revenue drop for tourism into European Union countries this year from $US200 billion ($302.5 billion) to $US124 billion.
