Australia's top coastal tourism destinations in northern NSW and southern Queensland have taken a beating from heavy rain and strong winds, and more wild weather – akin to a cyclone – is on the way.

Byron Bay's popular Clarkes Beach was smashed by strong winds, heavy rain and a king tide and most of the beach was washed into the ocean, in the lead-up to the Christmas holiday season.
