When the world’s best surfers paddle out at Margaret River next week, many will have a few more butterflies in their stomach than normal.

For the first time in a decade, several – including some of surfing’s biggest names such as Stephanie Gilmore and Owen Wright – face being demoted mid-year after the World Surf League adjusted the format for the sport’s most elite competition, the World Championship Tour.
