Australians woke up last Monday morning to the news that 28-year-old Cameron Smith had played out of his skin and won the 150th British Open.

Four shots behind at the end of the third day, on the final day Smith shot five birdies on the back nine at the home of golf, St Andrews in Scotland, to notch a record eight-under-par 64 to secure his elusive maiden major championship. It was a moment of great national pride.
