Coco Gauff powers into second round as Aussies progress
American teen sensation Coco Gauff has marched into the second round of the Australian Open on a blockbuster day for local hopes that saw Alexei Popyrin set up a date with defending champion Novak Djokovic.
Dubbed the “future of tennis” by The New Yorker in 2019 when she beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon at the age of 15, Gauff needed just one hour to dispatch Slovakian world No. 64 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in straight sets.
