Roar for medal success at silent Olympics
The atmosphere has been sterile. But now focus is on the athletes, the roar of excitement generated by Australia’s first gold medals was the real thing.
In keeping with the pandemic perhaps, the atmosphere at Friday night’s Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony was inevitably sterile without the normal atmospherics created by a mixed home town and international crowd witnessing a global spectacle first-hand.
It has also been slightly eerie to watch Australia’s swimmers compete before silent stands that are usually heaving with cheering spectators.
