Olympic-sized cracks emerge in US-Australia alliance

The Tokyo Games have allowed locked down Australians to indulge in escapist sporting rivalries for a glorious fortnight – and we mourn their ending.

If the pandemic was Australia’s nemesis ahead of getting to Tokyo, once we got there it was the United States.

The Yanks pipped Team Australia to gold – or the chance for it – in beach volleyball, the Matildas lost the battle for bronze to them on Thursday, and the US relegated the much-loved Boomers to the bronze play-off in men’s basketball.
