Manchester City Football Club won a treble haul of domestic trophies last season. The team can now lay claim to another title – jewel in the crown of the world’s most valuable sports business – thanks to Silver Lake’s investment.

This values City Football Group at $US4.8 billion ($7 billion), confirming the primacy of English sides as trophy assets. The erstwhile tech investor must prove a different proposition: that a famous club can underpin a “platform” business akin to Google or Facebook.
