Lord’s crowd were right to boo Australia

There is no question the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow was in accordance with the laws, but Australia should have realised the effect upon the spirit of the game, and acted magnanimously.

Every year the MCC, which owns Lord’s cricket ground, has a lecture on the Spirit of Cricket, a worthy event that seeks to preserve the fiction that the game is a metaphor for life, and not just a means by which a few highly gifted men earn a vast amount of money by playing it professionally.

If whoever has the honour of delivering the next lecture is lacking a subject, the dismissal of Jonny Bairstow should provide ample fodder for consideration.
