Australia’s enthralling two-wicket victory in the first Test of the 2023 Ashes series will reinforce the traditionalist belief that the long-format game is cricket’s most memorable form – compared with the upstart Twenty20 big bash format that has challenged Test supremacy over the past 15 years. Yet one of the greatest results in the 145-year history of Test cricket had as much to do with inverting the game’s time-worn traditions.
