AFL boss warns against reform that would eradicate local bookies
AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon has warned against the introduction of heavy-handed gambling laws that could force bookmakers to exit the market, claiming it could cost sports codes millions of dollars in fees and create issues with offshore match-fixing.
The federal government wants to reduce gambling harm and is considering several measures, including a blanket advertising ban on social media platforms and caps on the number of television and radio ads during sports matches. Another consideration, though unlikely, is the removal of gambling inducements altogether.
