When the coronavirus pandemic forced Australia into its first lockdown 18 months ago, Metcash chief executive Jeff Adams’ immediate response was defensive.

Adams ordered his leadership team to drop everything not related to three priorities – keeping staff and customers safe; keeping Metcash’s supply chain running so it could continue to supply its network of food, hardware and liquor stores; and keeping the wholesaler in good financial health.
