Kathmandu boss Xavier Simonet was keeping the best news up his sleeve when he released the retailer's better-than-expected full-year results last month.

Unbeknownst to Kathmandu shareholders, for the past five months the French native had been in negotiations to buy iconic surf wear group Rip Curl from founders Brian "Sing Ding" Singer and Doug "Claw" Warbrick.
