Key Points

  • Why it matters: PwC used secret government info to advise clients how to sidestep new tax laws
  • Ex-PwC tax partner Peter Collins was helping Treasury and ATO develop tax laws
  • PwC’s global leadership has now intervened and is doing its own review
  • Ex-CEO Tom Seymour will depart the firm early at the end of September
  • There are calls for PwC to be banned from government contracts over the scandal

Home Affairs secretary Mike Pezzullo says the PwC tax leaks scandal is a “salutary example” of the type of alleged conduct that should be referred to the national anti-corruption watchdog.

Mr Pezzullo also said he was “not confident” in the firm but added that there was no “lawful basis” to ban PwC from winning further contracts from his department.
