Accounting systems are stuck in the 19th century and need to be updated to allow better assessment of companies, says one accounting expert.

Accounting professor Peter Wells has called for the parliamentary inquiry into audit quality to push for modernisation of Australia's financial reporting systems to allow regulators, auditors and investors to better assess companies.
