Whitehaven accelerates production as coal woes mount

Whitehaven Coal continues to accelerate production in the face of woeful thermal coal prices as it tries to remain profitable and its major competitors look increasingly shaky.
The coal miner swung to a first-half net profit for the December half. It is pinning much of its hopes on the quality of its coal - which commands a premium to benchmark prices. It is in talks with new buyers in northern Asia.
