North Queensland was sweating in an unseasonable heatwave when the bulk carrier Kinko Maru started taking on board a controversial coal shipment.

The ship, as long as a dozen cricket pitches, was loaded with 87,270 tonnes of coal at the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal that August weekend in 2018, as temperatures in nearby Mackay hit 30 degrees.
