Rio Tinto has suspended the head of its African operations, Alan Davies, and a second executive over a payment made in connection with the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea.

Mr Davies, who was born in Brisbane, has been in charge of Rio's various projects in the developing continent, including Simandou, which Rio washed its hands of last month when it sold its stake in the project to Chinalco.
