Superannuation giant HESTA says changing the leadership of Rio Tinto will not automatically solve the systemic problems that exist between the mining industry and Indigenous Australians, and an external review of all of Rio's agreements with traditional owners is required.
With shareholders publicly urging Rio's board to dismiss or demote chief executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques and two of his senior executives at crisis meetings this week, HESTA warned against expectations that dismissals would solve the relationship between mining and traditional owners.
