Rio Tinto puts biofuels before batteries in carbon credit push

Rio Tinto has urged the federal government to make crops grown for the production of biofuels eligible for Australian carbon credit units as Canberra appeals to the private sector to propose its own eligibility criteria to earn these incentives.

Rio believes carbon-neutral biofuels will be its main method of reducing emissions in mining trucks and trains before 2030, given that electric and battery-powered fleets are not expected to be available nor affordable this decade.
