Mount Gibson Iron to restart high-grade Koolan Island mine
Mount Gibson Iron will restart production from its Koolan Island iron ore mine in Western Australia, as it seeks to capture the lofty premiums being paid for high-grade ore.
Some 2½ years after the mine's seawall failed and the pit flooded, the iron ore producer said studies had confirmed rebuilding the main pit seawall and restarting the mine would be safe and viable. Mount Gibson said it expected to produce 12.8 million tonnes of high-grade, 66 per cent iron ore from the mine over its 3½-year life from early 2019.
