Mineral sands miner Iluka Resources has opted to pay back JobKeeper subsidies it received from the Morrison government after a recovery in some markets and as it pursues plans to become a major player in rare earths.

However, Iluka will temporarily shut down synthetic rutile processing at Capel in Western Australia amid a legal battle with US chemicals heavyweight Chemours.
