The next chief executive faces a big decision over how best to maximise the company’s copper division. Some believe a break-up should be on the cards.

BHP’s ambition to become the world’s leading copper producer faces a fork in the road, as directors disagree on whether this should be achieved by breaking up its portfolio, or buying up mines.

Chairman Ross McEwan’s public assertion that BHP is stronger by keeping together its iron ore, coal and copper divisions is not a view shared by all directors. Some believe markets will not properly value companies that own both copper and coal mines.
