Fortescue Metals Group will block Gina Rinehart's companies from acquiring 100 per cent of Atlas Iron and keep a seat at the table in future negotiations over port capacity.

Mrs Rinehart's stake in Atlas pushed past 50 per cent on Friday, effectively ending any chance of a rival bid emerging from Fortescue or Atlas' original suitor, Mineral Resources.
