Former Rio Tinto CEO Sam Walsh breaks his silence on Guinea

Former Rio Tinto chief executive Sam Walsh has defended the approval, and quantum, of a controversial payment made to consultant Francois de Combret and says he has no idea why the mining giant asked authorities to investigate the matter.

In his first interview since the payment scandal broke in November, Mr Walsh told AFR Weekend he maintained a low profile after a series of leaked emails surfaced because he was "initially concerned about what was going on".
