Energy regulator ignores expert verdict on ‘fair’ coal profits
The Australian Energy Regulator says $18 a tonne is a “fair” profit margin for miners forced to sell their coal to NSW power generators, despite the dramatically higher margins on offer in export markets and a hired expert saying a fair margin would be 20 per cent higher.
Energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie told the AER that $21.70 a tonne was a fair margin for NSW coal miners selling to domestic customers based on the experience of all miners selling to the state’s power generators between 2016 and 2021.
