BHP tables $45bn plan to settle Brazilian quest for dam disaster cash

London | BHP and fellow iron ore miner Vale have made a fresh offer of 170 billion Brazilian reais ($45 billion) to bury the hatchet with the Brazilian federal and state governments over the 2015 Samarco dam disaster.

The deal is a big step up from an April offer of 127 billion reais, as BHP presses for a settlement before a major UK-based class action kicks off in a London court on Monday. But the Brazilian authorities and courts are yet to formally or publicly accept the new offer.
