BHP’s bid for OZ Minerals shows why copper is the new oil
As the world seeks greater access to the one metal essential for the energy transition, Australia needs a national strategy to be at the centre of this.
BHP’s announcement that it has made an offer for OZ Minerals and its copper-focused assets, is the latest in a series of global acquisitions aimed at shoring up copper supplies.
While this may be good for OZ Mineral shareholders, and presumably BHP’s, the underlying issue is, the world is not developing enough new copper deposits to meet expected demand.
