News Corp Australia has hired former WPP AUNZ chief executive Mike Connaghan into a newly created role of managing director of commercial content, targeting a market the Rupert Murdoch-controlled business believes is worth as much as $2 billion.

Mr Connaghan will start the new role at News Corp on Wednesday after finishing up gardening leave from WPP in April.
