Rio Tinto wants tax credits for aluminium smelters

Rio Tinto has urged the Albanese government to offer production credits to local aluminium smelters as the sector tries to survive the shift to lower carbon power sources.
Aluminium smelters are the nation’s biggest power consumers and Rio has warned it will not continue to operate its Queensland and NSW smelters beyond 2030 unless they are switched from mostly coal-fired power to clean energy.
