Gupta’s $500m Whyalla steelworks upgrade delayed by two years

A $500 million upgrade to the Whyalla steelworks run by British industrialist Sanjeev Gupta and his GFG Alliance will be delayed for two years.

Mr Gupta announced last year a plan to manufacture so-called green steel at the plant, originally part of BHP before being spun off into Arrium, with an electric arc furnace installed in place of a coal-based infrastructure, which has been in use since the 1960s. It was originally expected to be complete next year; the timeline has now stretched to 2027.
