Australia, whether it likes it or not, is now a fully paid-up member of President George Bush's "coalition of the willing".

By its decision to deploy a bigger and more complex force than earlier signalled, it is now unambiguously engaged in an enterprise whose logical conclusion is an assault on a sovereign state, possibly without United Nations approval.
