Macquarie's real estate deal of a lifetime
When the Sydney Metro project was announced, Macquarie Group sensed an opportunity quite literally under its nose – to design and build the station itself.

The call came just before Christmas 2015, as Andrew Cortese, managing partner of Grimshaw, Sydney, was planning some last-minute gift shopping. Would the architect be free to come into Macquarie Group headquarters on Martin Place for a quick chat?
“So there I am in the glass elevator tube being whisked up to the executive floor in my shorts and T-shirt,” Cortese recalls, “only to find Macquarie’s full executive team all in suits on Christmas Eve.”
