Inco joins Heron in nickel project
Canadian giant Inco could take on BHP Billiton in its own backyard after reaching an agreement with Heron Resources to develop its $1.4 billion nickel laterite project in Kalgoorlie.
Inco was regularly touted as a bidder for WMC Resources, operator of the Olympic Dam copper-uranium mine. WMC Resources is poised to come under the control of BHP Billiton, which recently trumped Xstrata's hostile takeover offer with a $9.2 billion bid. The deal will enable BHP Billiton to add WMC's substantial suite of nickel assets in Western Australia to its Ravensthorpe laterite project under development in the state's south.
